Lynn Valley Days cancelled due to World Cup

June 8, 2026

One of Lynn Valley's longest-running community traditions will not take place this year. The Lynn Valley Lions Club recently announced that Lynn Valley Days has been postponed until 2027 due to security concerns connected to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For more than 100 years, Lynn Valley Days has brought residents together through its parade, family activities, entertainment, food vendors, and community events. The annual celebration has become a familiar part of life for many families in the neighbourhood.

According to the Lynn Valley Lions Club, the decision was linked to concerns about security resources during the World Cup. While no World Cup matches will be played in North Vancouver, the tournament is expected to place additional pressure on police, first responders, and public safety resources throughout the region.

Eric Miura, president of the Lynn Valley Lions Club, said organizers were unable to secure the written RCMP support required for insurance coverage and safety planning.

Earlier this year, organizers had already begun preparing for the event. However, uncertainty surrounding World Cup security requirements made it difficult to confirm the arrangements needed to move forward. The challenge reflects how much Lynn Valley Days has changed over the years. What was once a small community gathering has grown into a large public event that requires extensive planning and safety measures.

Miura noted that organizers must now prepare for a wide range of potential emergencies. These include medical incidents, crowd management concerns, and other public safety risks. Security requirements have become even more significant following the tragic events at Vancouver's Lapu-Lapu Day Block Party last year.

During peak attendance, Lynn Valley Days can require support from police officers, firefighters, and paramedics. Organizers must also coordinate barricades, monitored entrances, emergency plans, and insurance requirements.

For many residents, the cancellation is disappointing because Lynn Valley Days is more than just an annual event. It is a tradition that brings the community together and celebrates the identity of the Lynn Valley neighbourhood. Miura said reactions have been mixed, with some residents understanding the decision while others are frustrated by the loss of the event this year. He believes those reactions demonstrate how important Lynn Valley Days has become for the community.

Although the celebration will not take place in 2026, organizers say the pause is temporary. The Lynn Valley Lions Club plans to bring the event back in 2027. Until then, Lynn Valley residents will have to wait another year for one of the community's most recognizable traditions to return.
