The North Shore Teen Film Festival returns this April, and it is happening right here at North Vancouver District Public Library—Lynn Valley Branch. A familiar space for many in the community, now turning into a place where young voices are projected onto a screen. What stands out most is that this is not framed as a competition. It is a showcase. That shift changes the atmosphere entirely. Instead of trying to outdo one another, participants are invited to share their work with a community audience and receive feedback. There is space to experiment, to be imperfect, and to simply be seen.

On April 25, the festival itself unfolds over the course of the day. It begins with a mobile filmmaking workshop in the morning, built around a simple but powerful idea: the tools are already in your hands. A smartphone can become a filmmaking device if you know how to use it with intention. The workshop focuses on turning something familiar into something creative and purposeful.

Later in the afternoon, there is a talk by Breanne Williamson, a North Vancouver-based filmmaker whose work began locally and has since reached a much wider audience. Her series “Basement 51,” filmed in her parents’ North Vancouver home, is a reminder that creative work does not need to start in large studios or formal spaces. It can begin in places that feel ordinary.

For many teens in Lynn Valley, that kind of example matters. Filmmaking can often feel distant, as if it belongs to bigger cities or established industries. Seeing someone from the same community build something from the ground up makes the idea feel more immediate and possible.

The day ends with screenings of short films created by local youth. These films may vary in style and polish, but they share something more important. They come from a specific place. They reflect the thoughts, concerns, and imagination of young people growing up on the North Shore.

There is something distinct about watching films at this stage, before they are shaped by industry expectations. The work feels more direct and more personal. You are not just watching a finished product, but the beginning of a creative voice.

This festival builds on what has already been growing in the community. In previous years, teen filmmakers participated in workshops and created films around themes like sustainability, learning the full process from scripting to editing. The focus has consistently been on learning, collaboration, and community engagement rather than competition. That continuity matters, especially in a place like Lynn Valley, where community spaces play such an important role. The library is not only a place for reading and studying, but also a place where creative expression can take shape and be shared.

The North Shore Teen Film Festival adds another layer to that identity. It creates a space where young people can take their ideas seriously and present them to an audience that understands where they come from.

If you find yourself near the library on April 25, it is worth stepping inside, even for a short time. You do not need to stay for the entire program. Just being in the room, watching a few films, is enough to feel the energy of it. You might see something raw. You might see something unexpected. You might even recognize a voice that feels familiar. And in that moment, the distance between audience and creator becomes a little smaller.
