Meetings are designed to be informal and welcoming. Teens take part in creative projects, plan activities, and sometimes help with community events such as parades or photo contests. Snacks are provided, and each meeting offers something a little different.
For younger students, the Lynn Valley Library is also offering a Tween Advisory Group for kids in grades 5 to 7. The group meets once a month, in person, at the Lynn Valley branch. Meetings run from 4 to 5 p.m. and give tweens a chance to share ideas, help design book displays, and take part in games and group activities.
The Tween Advisory Group focuses on building confidence and leadership while helping the library become more welcoming for younger users. Tweens also hear from guest speakers and learn how community spaces like libraries operate behind the scenes.
Both advisory groups connect directly to the teen-friendly spaces already available at the Lynn Valley Library. The branch offers study tables, quiet areas, graphic novels, manga, and video games. These spaces are meant to support both schoolwork and downtime, giving teens a place to gather that feels safe and comfortable.
Library staff say the goal of these programs is to give teens a sense of ownership. Rather than designing programs for teens, the library is creating space to design programs with them.
For Lynn Valley youth, the advisory groups offer something rare. A place to be heard. A place to meet others with shared interests. And a chance to see their ideas turn into real changes on the shelves, in programs, and throughout the library.
Teens and tweens interested in joining can contact the Lynn Valley Library directly or email [email protected] for more information.
