E-Dirt Bike Complaints Raise Safety Concerns in Lynn Valley

May 8, 2026

Electric dirt bikes are becoming a growing safety concern across North Vancouver, including in Lynn Valley.

Over the weekend, North Vancouver RCMP responded to five separate complaints involving teens riding high-powered electric dirt bikes dangerously on public roads. Police said riders were seen weaving through traffic, performing wheelies, and riding recklessly near vehicles and pedestrians.

One complaint involved youth riding on a turf field at Delbrook Recreation Centre. Later that evening, officers found several electric dirt bikes parked outside a fast-food restaurant in Lynn Valley. RCMP seized a 2026 Surron bike that was not street legal.

The incidents are raising concerns for many residents and parents in the area, especially as warmer weather brings more youth outdoors around parks, schools, neighbourhood roads, and commercial areas like Lynn Valley Village. Police say many parents may not realize these bikes are treated differently from regular e-bikes under B.C. law. Unlike e-bikes, e-dirt bikes do not have pedals and cannot legally operate on public streets unless they meet strict motorcycle requirements for insurance, registration, and safety equipment.

“We’re seeing more cases where parents are purchasing these bikes without realizing their child cannot legally ride them around the neighbourhood or to school,” said Corporal Mansoor Sahak of the North Vancouver RCMP.

RCMP also said previous attempts to stop riders have sometimes resulted in youth fleeing at high speeds, creating what police described as an “extreme risk” for both riders and the public.

The issue is not limited to North Vancouver. Earlier this month, Lake Country RCMP also warned about the rise of illegal e-dirt bikes on roads across B.C. Police reminded riders that operating these vehicles illegally can lead to significant fines, vehicle impoundments, and future licensing consequences for youth. North Vancouver RCMP says officers have largely taken an education-first approach so far because the vehicles are still relatively new. However, police say enforcement will increase for repeat violations.

As the popularity of electric dirt bikes continues to grow, the conversation in communities like Lynn Valley is increasingly shifting toward safety, responsibility, and whether parents fully understand the risks before purchasing the bikes for their children.
