Lynn Valley residents petition to reverse Hastings Creek Trail closure

March 5, 2026

A well-used trail in Lynn Valley has become the centre of a growing community debate. Residents are petitioning the District of North Vancouver to pause the permanent closure of a large section of the Hastings Creek Trail, arguing the decision was made without enough community consultation. The District says the trail is no longer safe and would cost millions of dollars to repair.

The Hastings Creek Trail runs through the Lynn Valley neighbourhood and connects residents to forested areas, Inter River Park, and nearby walking routes. For many locals, it has long been part of daily routines—used for exercise, school routes, and quiet time in nature.

Earlier this month, the District confirmed plans to decommission the entire middle section of the trail and remove a damaged bridge over Hoskins Creek. Officials cited public safety concerns, environmental risks, and an estimated $5-million upfront cost required to stabilize the area.

The trail has faced repeated damage in recent years following atmospheric rivers and severe storms. Erosion, slope failures, and landslides have made parts of the route unstable. District staff say decades of monitoring and repair efforts have reached their limit.

“The effects of erosion and slope failure can no longer be mitigated,” the District stated, adding that safety must remain the top priority. But many Lynn Valley residents say the trail’s value goes beyond infrastructure costs.

Local resident Mike Ryan launched an online petition asking the District to pause further decommissioning work until broader community discussions can take place. The petition gathered more than 600 signatures within a week.

Ryan said users were surprised by the announcement and want the council to better understand how important the trail is to the neighbourhood. He described the route as a place where residents disconnect from daily stress while staying active close to home. People continue to use the trail despite closures, he said, showing how central it remains to the community.

Supporters of the petition argue that Hastings Creek Trail provides safe pedestrian access between neighbourhood areas, including routes used by students travelling to Ross Road Elementary School. Some worry that closing the trail may push walkers onto busier roads or encourage unofficial paths through unstable terrain. The petition does not ask the District to ignore safety concerns. Instead, residents are calling for transparency and meaningful consultation before permanent changes are finalized.

“We are asking for a pause, transparency, and genuine dialogue,” the petition states, urging public meetings or surveys to explore possible solutions.

District officials acknowledge the emotional connection residents have with the trail. Caroline Jackson, the District’s general manager of climate action and parks, said staff understand how well loved the trail is and share the community’s disappointment. However, she said repair costs would likely exceed $5 million initially, with ongoing storm damage expected to require continued investment. Even with major construction work, long-term safety could not be guaranteed.

Hastings Creek is also considered one of North Vancouver’s most important urban watersheds. The area supports salmon habitat, and restoration work following closure will focus on erosion mitigation, invasive species removal, and replanting native vegetation.
