Park safety concerns continue in Lynn Valley as vandalism and cliff-jumping risks persist

March 6, 2026

Walk the trails around Lynn Valley long enough and you will see two sides of the same story. On one side, quiet forest paths. Cedar trees. The sound of Lynn Creek moving through the canyon. On the other side, growing concerns about safety.

In recent months, vandalism has damaged trail shrubbery in the area multiple times. Local volunteers and park users say the damage has been reported more than eight times recently. Small trees and plants along the trails have been cut or broken. It may seem minor at first glance. But for park stewards, the damage adds up.

Shrubbery along the trails plays a role in protecting fragile ecosystems. It also helps guide visitors and keep people from wandering off paths. When vegetation is removed or damaged, the trails become more vulnerable to erosion and unsafe shortcuts.

For a community like Lynn Valley, where the forests are part of daily life, the issue has sparked frustration among residents who rely on the trails year-round. At the same time, another safety challenge continues to draw attention in nearby Lynn Canyon Park.

Every summer, thousands of visitors arrive in Lynn Valley to explore the canyon, cross the suspension bridge, and cool off in the water below. But the dramatic cliffs and fast-moving creek also make the park one of the most dangerous recreational spots on the North Shore. Officials say dozens of people have died in the canyon over the past several decades. According to emergency responders, the water is powerful and deceptively cold. Slippery cliffs and unstable rock faces add to the risk.

“It’s very fast-moving, powerful water and even a strong swimmer can easily be overcome,” North Shore Rescue team leader Scott Merriman said.

After a series of deadly incidents last summer, the District of North Vancouver introduced new safety signage in the park. Bright red and black warning signs now appear in several high-risk areas around Lynn Canyon. The signs carry a clear message: “Extreme danger.”

They also appear in multiple languages. Officials say the change reflects the canyon’s international popularity. Many visitors come from outside the region and may not understand older warning signs written only in English. District officials say the goal is simple. Make the danger unmistakable.

“The plan is to have it speak to more people,” said District of North Vancouver Assistant Fire Chief Ryan Stewart.

The new signs include graphics showing prohibited behaviour such as climbing over fences, diving into the water or leaving marked trails. Some messages are designed to speak directly to younger visitors. One newer sign reads: “Spoiler alert: Your viral jump ends in the hospital.”

Cliff jumping has long been a problem in the canyon. Even though fences block many cliff edges, people still climb over barriers to reach popular jumping spots. Emergency crews respond to injuries in the park every year. Officials say the risks go beyond the height of the jump. The water below can cause shock within seconds. Hidden rocks and powerful currents make rescue difficult.

“The water is very, very cold,” North Vancouver Fire Chief Mike Danks said in a recent warning.

Park rangers have also increased patrols through Lynn Canyon. Their goal is to educate visitors and keep people on designated trails. Search-and-rescue volunteers say prevention is key. New signage, fencing and patrols are all part of the effort to keep visitors safe. But for Lynn Valley residents, the broader conversation about stewardship continues.

The forests, trails and canyon that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors each year are also part of the neighbourhood’s identity. Protecting them—from vandalism or dangerous behaviour—remains an ongoing challenge.
