Looking for a tuneful end of the week, and happy to support a great cause? Proceeds from this community concert on Friday, May 26 will help fund Rainbow Refugees, a group that supports people seeking refugee protection in Canada due to sexual orientation or gender issues. The following press release is from the Lynn Valley United Church website:

Defying Gravity is a fundraising concert featuring baritone, Geoffrey Dice – a Vancouver dentist and member of the Vancouver Men’s Chorus and Lynn Valley United Church’s Music Minister, Frank Chu.  The duo have joined forces to perform music they both love and feel empowers the spirit.

In a world where labels can sometimes constrain those who do not conform to traditional definition, hearts and voices can be stifled in the ability truly sing. This concert, through music that makes the soloists’ hearts soar, demonstrates what it means to defy gravity in every way.  In addition to showcasing some amazing music by Leonard Cohen, Tom Leher, Stephen Schwartz, Henri Duparc and piano works by Brahms, Debussy and Schubert, this concert will raise awareness and funds for the Vancouver-based, not-for-profit and CRA-registered charity, Rainbow Refugee.

Founded in 2000, Rainbow Refugee is a Vancouver-based community group that supports people seeking refugee protection in Canada because of persecution based on sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression (SOGIE) or HIV status. They support and assist LGBTQ+ /HIV+ refugee claimants in BC’s Lower Mainland through facilitated peer support, referrals, system navigation and accompaniment.

Cost: Admission by donation ($20 suggested, tax receipt available by request for donations over $30).
